1. Akismet
This plugin comes with the wordpress download. It does a wonderful job of catching spam - and believe me you want to catch all spam as much of it is the opposite of family friendly. It has to be activated from the plugins tab and you will need your Wordpress API key.
2. Statpress
The geeky side of me just loves statistics but even if you run screaming at the very word it is so important to know as much about your traffic as possible. There are other ways of getting stats such as Google Analytics which I also recommend you avail yourself of but statpress does a really good job and present the stats in a very easy to understand way.
3. Follow Url
Wordpress has built into it an automatic nofollow status. This means that people leaving comments do not earn a backlink to their site. If like me you are a believer in what Lynn Terry calls linklove and want to reward people who leave a non spam comment with a backlink to their site then install this plugin which strips the nofollow tag.

Hi Katherine,
I told you I’d be talking to you. I’ve been busy looking over your blog and found these plug-ins very helpful. I had no idea that Wordpress had no-follow tags built in by default. We can’t have that, can we?

Never used statpress myself either on my WP hosted blogs.
However I do like your CommentLuv plugin. Goes hand in hand with Follow Url. Same for the KeyWordLuv plugin too.
