4 years ago , a lightning storm fried my hard drive. I lost family pictures, emails with vital contact information, bank account records and everything else that was on my hard drive. I didn’t back up very often so most of it was unrecoverable, gone forever.

You would have thought I would have learned my lesson but I still didn’t back up my hard drive regularly - far too much hassle. Luckily, I didn’t have any more incidents but I knew I had to find some solution when I started running a home business which meant losing the information stored on my computer would have severe consequences. I asked around my circle for recommendations to best solve this problem and I was pointed in the direction of online back-up companies and one name cropped up several times. Mozy is a secure online backup system that is extremely easy to use and remarkably cheap -$4.95 a month for the personal back up and $3.95 +$0.50 per GB of storage for the business account.

What I love about Mozy is that it performs backups every 24 hours automatically. The first backup does take a LONG time so make sure you schedule it overnight. After that it only backs up changes to existing files and new files but this too can be scheduled for times when the computer is not being used. Setting it up is a breeze as the initial configuration will suggest files such as music, pictures and word processing documents and find them on your system. You can then set rules to find and add to the backup other types of files. After that you choose how often it backs up ( I set it daily at 2 am) and you can then never think about it again. To restore a file from a backup version, you simply right click on the file and then choose “restore previous version”.

If you use your computer for personal reasons choose home - it has a very simple and easy to use interface and is a very inexpensive solution. If you run a business from home, select pro - it may turn out a little more expensive but the support is far superior for the pro version - telephone support and live chat support instead of email including support to help you through the set-up, step by step to make sure you back up all your important business files.
