Blog commenting

Reasons to comment on blogs

  • It is another way to get your name out there
  • It is a great way to start building a relationship with the blog creator and his or her audience
  • If they have a dofollow plugin then you will receive a backlink for your site (Firefox has a plugin that tests for this that can be downloaded here )
  • Blog readers will follow you to your website thus creating traffic – I get on average between 3 and 5 visitors for every comment I leave which quickly adds up with frequent commenting)
  • If blog reading is already an activity of yours, then commenting takes very little extra time so is very time effecient
  • Dos and don’ts of commenting

  • Don’t be shy – the blog creator wants your comments – otherwise they would not make that feature available on their site.
  • Do make your comment have some value – share your own experiences, offer an alternative view, ask a question, suggest solutions.
  • Do be polite and respectful. You are in someone’s virtual home so be a good guest. Most bloggers won’t mind you disagreeing with them as long as you do so in a respectful manner.
  • My Challenge to you

If you have never commented before then make this the day that you do. Tell me why you do not normally comment.

If you regularly comment either here or elsewhere please share what benefits you see to doing so.

In return, I will visit your blog and leave a comment there.
Also I do have the dofollow plugin so you will get a backlink for your website or blog.
I have downloaded the top commenters of the month plug in so if you post enough comments you will be listed in a high profile area of my blog.

I agree that commenting on other blogs is a good way to gain recognition for you and your business. You can showcase your expertise by leaving a tip or suggest an idea to the blog host. Or you can ask a question to the blog host in order to keep the conversation going on the blog.
I really enjoy commenting on those blogs I frequent because I also like to let the host know that they are providing valuable content to their readers…like me.

      Thanks Katherine for this post.

      Sincerely,

      Teresa Morrow

I have just started to make a point of commenting on people’s blogs, mostly to thank the blog author for the valuable information they have shared, or to add my own experience. I agree that it’s a fast and easy way to build relationships online.

Commenting on blogs has brought several visitors to my site who probably would not have visited otherwise, and has given me more chances to spread the word about what I do, and inspire people musically :) !

      Thanks for this great post!

      All the best,
      Christina

      Katherine,

Another way to encourage people to leave a comment is to use the WP Commentluv plug-in.

I’ve just installed it on my blog (got it from here: http://www.fiddyp.co.uk/commentluv-wordpress-plugin/

However I should tweak the theme slightly to make it more conspicuous.

Commentluv goes and scrapes the commenter’s latest post from their blog, and inserts its title. Hence the encouragement to leave a comment.

      Cheers,
      Nadine

Very good stuff there. All tried and tested by myself.

“then commenting takes very little extra time so is very time effecient” => Makes all the sense in the world to me! ;)

      Cheers!

Theresa, thank you for those additional reasons to add comments.

Christina, I visited your site and loved it – couldn’t find a place to comment though!

    • 7 Katherine Reschke // Mar 19, 2008 at 12:28 am

Nadine, I do have commentluv activated but for some reason it often doesn’t work – i have just upgraded it to the latest version so maybe it will work a little better now.

Argh…sorry Katherine! My site must be experiencing some technical problems! I’ll let you know when I get it working properly.

    • 9 Christina Thompson // Mar 20, 2008 at 6:18 am

OK – all my blog posts are now commentable, except for the ones with videos on them! There is some kind of bug in my blog program, but I found a trick to get around it.

Thanks for visiting and I’m glad you liked the site!

      Hi Katherine!

Relationships . . . ah, what a wonderful way to build your business. Commenting on other people’s blogs certainly encourages the writer to continue posting valuable information. I totally agree that comments simply saying “good job” or “I like it” are totally useless to the writer.

I enjoy commenting and do it on a regular basis – following a multitude of bloggers and learning quite a lot from each one. When I post my comment, I refer back to the info that was posted so that my comment is registered as a genuine compliment, or in some situations, asking for more information or to clarify something that was written.

Katherine, I love what you are doing with your blog. The posts (all of them) are written to make us (the reader) think about our own situation(s) and to respond appropriately. The subject of doing what you are passionate about, or following your passion is something that a lot of people need to read and understand.

As for me, I am following my passion – networking, I love it and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to continue sharing it with your readers as well as my own!

It’s very evident Katherine, that YOUR passion is helping others — and you certainly “walk your talk!”

      Yours in networking!
      Carol

      Katherine,
Great information! I sometimes don’t comment but you’ve inspired me to!
I’m even going to forward your blog to my Affordable Mineral Makeup reps for them to read as well and perhaps help their businesses & blogs.
      To success,
      Tara

Hi! I’m new to the blogging scene. I still don’t know much about blog commenting or blog posting. I came across your blog site while searching… I really wish to know the best way to look for blogs for comment posting. What are things I should consider?

Hyzent, choose blogs that you enjoy to read. Also choose ones that are a mixture of established and newer in your niche. You can use http://blogsearch.google.com/ to find the blogs in the first place.

I occasionally leave comments, but I will certainly do so more often now. This post presented a prospective I hadn’t considered. That, to me, is blogging at it’s best.

One think that I want to share is that commenting really helps in building a network of fellow bloggers which is very important for sucessful blogging.

everyone should no that just because google will not count a no-follow link that does not mean that Yahoo! and Bing will do the same, as these major search engines ignore the “no-follow” tag.
