Blog Carnivals – an update

April 2nd, 2008 · 4 Comments

I have been doing blog carnivals for a couple of months now so here is an update on how well they are working for me.

My VA submits me to an average of 6 carnivals a months and in total I get about 40 unique visitors from them so I am seeing some traffic but not an awful lot. They do count as backlinks to my site so they will help to improve my Google PR – make sure you submit to a mix of new ones and ones that are working for you.

One tip I have learnt is to make sure that my headlines are compelling – headings which make sense for your blog may not work as well for a carnival so considering rewriting the headline to make it entice readers to click through to your blog. The heading for this post is a classic example of a post I would rewrite if I submitted it to a carnival.

Help to get the blog carnival itself noticed by adding it to the social bookmarks such as Digg and Stumbleupon – driving traffic to the carnival increases your chance of people seeing your blogpost and clicking through to your blog.

Overall I wouldn’t consider carnivals a huge success – I find I get more traffic by commenting on other people’s blogs but as there isn’t a huge time commitment necessary to get involved it is still a strategy to be considered.

Blog carnivals can be a helpful addition to a online marketing plan for an internet business. And as I said, they are a piece of the plan…not the whole thing.
As you mentioned Katherine the headline is important however, I think there are two other things that are equally important.
Be sure that you look for blog carnivals that are going to be posted in front of those who want to read your post.
Also, remember it is about knowing that you can change your mind if you don’t get the results you aren’t happy with. And of course, you also have the opportunity to start your own blog carnival if you like.
Or you can choose to host an existing carnival which can be a nice way to receive some new people on your blog.
If you are curious about blog carnivals, you can go to http://www.blogcarnival.com and register today.
Take your time to look through the list and see some that you may want to add your next post to.
