Be a better writer

I learned several tips from Linda Dessau during last week’s Passion Project BTR show. These are the particular standouts for me.

1. If you struggle with writing:-
a) consider if you really need to write. Although you may have had it drummed into you that blogs and article marketing are great (and they are!) they are not the only route to take. Instead of blogs consider podcasts or your own Blogtalkradio show. Instead of article marketing, submit videos to youtube.com. Ask yourself how you can connect with your ideal clients without having to write.

b) consider a ghost writer. This is not exactly a cheap option but may be worth your while to get your signature ebook or physical book out there. There are many advantages to writing a book including positioning yourself as an expert and gaining credibility in your field so you may have to bite the bullet and hire a great ghostwriter (such as Linda Dessau)

c) if your writing just needs some polishing – maybe your grammar isn’t so hot or your style a little unwieldy – then consider hiring an editor to do the job. This is a cheaper option than getting the whole thing ghost written.

d) if you want to write a book but find the prospect of writing THAT many words daunting, break the book down into the top 10 main points and write articles on each of these points. Write an introduction and conclusion and some linking text between the articles and your book will write itself AND the articles can generate interest and marketing buzz along the way.

2. If your blog posts or articles tend to get way too long:-

a) pick out the main point of the article

b) choose two or three supporting points

c) remove everything else (consider making other points into their own blog post or article – you may even get a series out of it.

3. People’s attention span when reading online is very very short so make your posts short and concise, leave plenty of white space and consider using a list format.

Thank you Linda for this great information!

It is always a good idea to have someone else to proofread your work after your done. Often times it is very easy to overlook mistakes and it can never hurt to have a second opinion.
