Tell me a little about your passion.
My passion is helping small businesses offline increase their profits through online opportunities and effective local marketing.
Is this a new passion or one you have had all your life?
I’ve always been passionate about communication, writing and speaking and so forth, but honing it down to marketing for small business…that’s taken time, training and experience.
What was your greatest challenge when you first started to follow your passion?
The greatest challenge has been getting people who knew me through other endeavors to take me seriously as far as my skills and knowledge in this “new to them” area.
What benefits have you received from living your passion?
I’m more in control of my time and energies. I’m a happier person because I can be honest and blunt and not have to worry about word getting back to my bosses.
How supportive have the people in your life been?
My family and friends have been very supportive in my efforts. I’ve been out on my own with a business of my own before, and the support wasn’t quite there, but now they (especially my family) understands better what I am doing and what I hope to accomplish for all of us.
What changes to your mindsets/thought patterns have you made in order to be successful?
I’ve had to learn to stop doubts and negativity from creeping in and develop ways better ways of coping when things aren’t going my way. It’s always a process for me and I struggle to be consistent, but I’m light years beyond where I used to be.
Where do you see yourself in a year? In five years?
In a year I hope to be the top choice for marketing consultations in my local area. In five, I want to be the top choice in the province.
Are you a planner or do you tend to prefer to fly by the seat of your pants?
Both. I like to have a solid plan that I can refer to, but at the same time I like to grab opportunities that arise.
Are you a left or a right brain thinker?
I’m not sure. I think I tend more to the left with creativity, but I also love to dig into financial analytics and play with numbers to create forecasts and what if scenarios.
Who is your hero?
Ghandi. For a few reasons. One, I’m half East Indian and his story is a tangible reminder of the best of my roots. Secondly, because he was a man of great passion and commitment to his own ideals. He didn’t slack on his stance and beliefs even in the face of great opposition.
Which 3 traits contribute most to your success?
Stubbornness, Empathy, and Curiosity.
Stubbornness is just another word for persistence, but I like it better because it sounds stronger, even if other people think of it as a negative trait.
Empathy, because I have to understand everything I offer in terms of the perspective of the client and how they see their situation. I can’t help them if I don’t understand where they are coming from and what they hope to achieve.
Curiousity, because I am never satisfied with stock answers which drives me to read and research and dig for the information and answers I need to do the best job possible.
Which trait do you most wish to change?
I wish I could learn to like housework. I used to think it was a time management issue, but have discovered even if I free up the time to do it, given the choice, I won’t. I know that doesn’t have much to do with business, but it sure would help my personal life a lot and since I work from home, it has become a business issue. I can’t invite clients to my house or hold small seminars in my living room even though we have the room and all the tools.
