Tell me a little about your passion.
I love being creative. Mostly with color. All types of color, from
paints to crayons to powdered pigments and hair color to clothing and
fabrics.
Is this a new passion or one you have had all your life?
I’ve had it
all my life. I remember being a child and playing in our dirt driveway.
I was digging and was fascinated with the color change and intensity of
hue in the dirt when I added water to it.
What was your greatest challenge when you first started to follow your passion?
Hmmm, I don’t remember but I can tell you what it is now. It is staying
in the passion and not getting bogged down by the business end of
things. While I am probably a serial entrepreneur, I am not formally
trained in business so the technicalities can drag me out of the fun
part of what I do.
What benefits have you received from living your passion?
I don’t hate going to work most of the time!
How supportive have the people in your life been?
Most have been
extremely supportive. My mom is my number one helper with my 10 year
old daughter being a close second. She wants to be president and CEO
when she gets older.
What changes to your mindsets/thought patterns have you made in order
to be successful?
I’m actually still working on the changes. I’ve been
successful in the past and then, for many reasons, not so much. I think
it goes back to staying within the passion and not getting overwhelmed
by the stuff that isn’t fun for me. Believing in my product, and
believing in myself are also 2 really big mindsets that I have to work
on. There have been some people along the way who impacted those
beliefs and I’m just now getting to where I recognize what happened and
am able to correct the mind sets.
Where do you see yourself in a year? In five years?
This reminds me of a job interview I had about 12 years ago. I’m
nowhere near where I thought I would be at that time! Well, I guess
maybe I am because I am in charge of my own future and am running my
own business, though it is a different one.
I am working on my vision daily and it has certainly changed in the
last year through much soul searching a great coaching class that
helped me get past the walls I had put up internally. I see myself
running my company on a much larger scale and being able to participate
only minimally in the areas I don’t enjoy like bookwork and billing,
while being able to concentrate on the creativity area of making my
products, working with new colors and helping train new customers and
retailers.
Are you a planner or do you tend to prefer to fly by the seat of your
pants?
A little bit of both, really. I like to get a general plan of
what I want to do, but sometimes (ok, often), I just throw it out there
without thinking too hard about the how and why.
Are you a left or a right brain thinker?
Ambidextrous Well, math isn’t
my favorite but I do like analysis and seeing how things work, but
you’ve probably seen that I am creative without having to know the
details of how the creative process works before I jump in.
Who is your hero?
All the parents out there who have gone before me
that had children who were not “normal”. Even with the more common
knowledge of special needs children in the US, it is an extremely hard
fight to get help for my daughter and my self. I can only imagine how
hard it was in the past when children were sent to institutions and
denied family love and guidance.
Which 3 traits contribute most to your success?
Kindness, compassion, and intuition.
Which trait do you most wish to change?
Fear. The fear is what holds me
back or keeps me from jumping at opportunity when I know it is right.
